Used Guitar Inspection Checklist

Neck & playability

  • Sight down the neck: it should be nearly straight, not twisted.
  • Play every fret on every string - note buzzing, dead spots, or notes that choke out.
  • Check the truss rod cover area for cracks or repairs, and that the neck joint is tight with no gaps.

Frets & fingerboard

  • Look for deep grooves under the strings in the first frets (expensive to fix).
  • Run a finger along the fret ends - sharp sprout can be filed, heavy wear costs more.

Electronics (electric)

  • Plug in. Turn every knob and flip every switch - listen for crackle, dropouts, hum that changes when you touch the strings.
  • Test every pickup position at volume.

Body & hardware

  • Check around the neck pocket, headstock (a classic break point) and strap buttons for cracks or repaired breaks.
  • Tuners should turn smoothly; the bridge should adjust, not be rusted solid.
