Found a Crack in Your Acoustic Guitar? What to Do Right Now

Most acoustic cracks are caused by dry air, and most are very repairable - if you handle them right in the first few days. The key is to stop the crack spreading, keep it clean, and get it to a repairer. Here's what to do and what to expect.

Quick answer

Loosen the strings to take tension off, don't touch or press on the crack (skin oils make it harder to glue), and don't try superglue or wood glue. Put the guitar in its case with a humidifier if the crack is from dryness, and book a repair luthier soon. Simple cleated top cracks typically cost around $150-250 at published shop rates; finish touch-up is extra.

Step by step: the first 48 hours

  1. Slacken the strings so the crack isn't under load - especially if it's near the bridge.
  2. Don't run your finger over it or press it. Premier Guitar notes oils from your skin get into the crack and make a clean glue joint harder.
  3. Don't glue it yourself. Glue in the wrong place, or the wrong glue, makes a proper repair harder and more expensive.
  4. Keep it in its case with a humidifier if the room is dry - many dryness cracks close partly as the wood rehydrates, and luthiers often humidify a crack closed before gluing.
  5. Photograph it and note its length and where it is (top, back, side; near the bridge or soundhole).
  6. Book a repair luthier soon - fresh cracks are easier to repair than old ones.

How serious is it?

TypeWhat it means
Finish crack only (no gap in wood, often fine lines)Usually cosmetic; caused by temperature change. Have it checked.
Top or back crack along the grainThe most common dryness crack. Usually cleated and glued.
Crack near or behind the bridgeCan be structural; slacken strings and get it checked promptly.
Lifting bridge, bulging top or cracked neck/headstockStructural - stop playing it and see a repairer.

What it costs (published shop rates, Oct 2026)

Prices vary by shop, guitar and crack. Examples from published price lists:

Old, dirty or open cracks may need a splint (a sliver of wood) and more finish work, which costs more.

Prevention: humidity

Cracks usually come from dry air - heated homes in winter, air conditioning, or a guitar stored near a heater. Keep acoustic guitars around 45-55% relative humidity: use a hygrometer, and in dry months keep the guitar in its case with a humidifier. These won't fix a crack, but they help prevent the next one. Compare them in Humidipak vs Humitar.

FAQ

Can a cracked acoustic guitar be fixed?

Usually, yes. Most top and back cracks are repairable with glue and cleats, especially if they are fresh and clean.

Should I loosen the strings on a cracked guitar?

Yes. Slacken them to take stress off the crack until it is repaired.

Can I superglue a crack in my guitar?

No. Superglue in the wrong place makes a proper repair harder and more costly. Take it to a repairer.

How much does it cost to fix a crack in an acoustic guitar?

Published shop rates we checked range from about $150-250 for a simple cleated crack, with finish touch-up from about $50 extra. Complex repairs cost more.

Will a humidifier fix a crack?

No, but humidifying can help a dryness crack close before a repairer glues it, and it helps prevent new cracks.
