Bass Strings Ringing When You Play? Muting Tips and Fret Wraps
Open strings ringing on when you did not play them is one of the most common bass complaints, and guitarists hit it too with high gain. The strings you are not playing vibrate in sympathy with the ones you are. Technique fixes most of it. A fret wrap handles the rest in situations like tapping and recording.
Quick answer
Mute with both hands first: rest the plucking-hand thumb on the strings below the one you play (the floating thumb), and let your fretting-hand fingers lightly touch the strings you are not using. A fret wrap is a strap with a soft pad that sits at the first fret and damps every open string. It is great for tapping, recording and high-gain playing, but slide it to the headstock when you need open strings.
Sympathetic vibration. Notes you play make other strings vibrate, especially open strings tuned to related notes.
Lifting a finger. Letting go of a fretted note lets it ring open unless you mute it.
Behind the nut. The short lengths of string between the nut and the tuners can ring. A fret wrap does not reach these, but a soft hair tie or a bit of foam behind the nut does.
Technique fixes (free)
Floating thumb (bass). Rest your plucking-hand thumb on the strings below the one you are playing, moving it as you cross strings.
Plucking-finger rest stroke. After plucking, let the finger come to rest on the next string, which mutes it.
Fretting-hand muting. Flatten your fretting fingers slightly so they touch nearby strings, and release fretted notes by easing pressure instead of lifting off.
Palm muting (guitar). Rest the side of your picking hand near the bridge on strings you are not playing.
Are fret wraps cheating?
No. Many professional players use them, especially in the studio. For learning, practise the muting technique without one too, so you can play clean when you need open strings.
Choosing a size
Gruv Gear's size guide puts 4-string basses and 6-string guitars in Small, 5-string basses in Medium, and 6-string basses and 7- to 8-string guitars in Large. Check your instrument before you buy.
