Bass Setup Cost and Truss Rod Adjustment

Last checked Oct 23, 2026. By Andrew. See the sources.

Quick answer

A bass setup costs about $90 on average at US shops that post prices ($57-$125 range), plus strings. You can adjust the truss rod yourself: face the nut, clockwise = less bow, ¼ turn at a time, aiming for about 0.3 mm relief.

How much does a bass setup cost?

WhereTypical price (US)
Independent shops that post prices (12 shops)about $90 average, $57-$125 range
Music & Artsabout $96 plus strings
Big-city or boutique luthier$125-$200
Strings (if not included)$20-$40

A standard setup covers a truss rod adjustment, action height, intonation, pickup height, and usually a clean and fretboard conditioning. Fret levelling, nut replacement and electronics fixes cost extra. Budget it into your first year with the total cost calculator.

Bass truss rod: doing it yourself

Bass necks are long and the strings pull hard, so a bass truss rod often needs a little more turning than a guitar's, but the rule is the same: face the nut, clockwise tightens (less bow), counter-clockwise loosens. Full diagram: truss rod adjustment.

  1. Tune to pitch. Fret the E string at the 1st fret and where the neck meets the body.
  2. Measure the gap at the 8th fret. Fender's bass spec is about 0.3 mm (0.012"). A thick business card is close.
  3. Turn a quarter turn at most, retune, wait 15 minutes or more, and re-measure.
  4. Then set action with the bass action height chart.
Pay a tech instead if the nut is stiff or seized, you've already turned it more than a full turn without change, frets are lifting, or the neck has a twist (one side bows more than the other).

FAQ

How much does a bass setup cost?

About $90 on average at independent US shops that post prices, with most between $57 and $125, plus strings if not included.

Is a bass setup worth it?

Yes, especially for a new or used bass. Lower, buzz-free action makes practice easier.

How often does a bass need a setup?

Once or twice a year, often at seasonal humidity changes, or when you change string gauge.

Which way do I turn a bass truss rod?

Face the nut: clockwise tightens and straightens the neck, counter-clockwise adds bow.

What is normal relief on a bass?

About 0.3 mm (0.012") at the 8th fret is Fender's starting point.
