How to Store a Guitar: Daily, Long-Term and In a Case
Storage protects a guitar from three things: knocks, temperature swings and humidity swings. Stands and hangers win on convenience; cases win on protection. Which you need depends on how often you play and how stable your room is.
Editorial guide built from manufacturer instructions and specs - not hands-on testing. Product cards link to Amazon; we never show Amazon prices here.
Quick answer
Daily: a stand or wall hanger in a room with stable temperature and humidity, away from radiators, heaters, air vents, sunny windows and exterior doors. Long-term: in its case, in a lived-in part of the home (not an attic, garage or damp basement), with humidity control if the air is dry, and strings at or near normal tension unless your maker advises otherwise. Check on it every few weeks.

Where never to store a guitar
- Attics and garages: big temperature and humidity swings; heat can soften glue and finishes.
- Car trunks: heat in summer, cold in winter - never overnight.
- Damp basements and bathrooms: moisture swells wood and rusts strings and hardware (see strings rusting).
- Next to heaters, air vents or sunny windows: direct heat and dry air are classic causes of cracked solid-wood tops.
Humidity: the part most people miss
Solid-wood acoustics react most to humidity. Taylor's care guides put the ideal range at 45-55% relative humidity (Taylor builds its guitars at about 46-47%). A cheap hygrometer tells you where your room actually sits. In dry seasons - including heated homes in winter - a closed case plus a humidifier is the practical fix; Taylor warns against humidifiers that seal off the soundhole unless you also humidify near the headstock, because the neck needs moisture too. In damp climates, keep the guitar out of humid rooms; Taylor suggests silica gel packs in the case or a room dehumidifier for year-round high humidity. Warning signs: sharp fret ends (fret sprout), action changes, a sinking or bulging top, cracks. The two humidifiers below are the direct tools for in-case storage; our care & humidifiers page compares them.

Daily storage: stand or wall hanger
A guitar you can grab gets played more. A stable stand that supports the neck, or a hanger on a solid interior wall, is fine as long as the room is stable. Check the yoke fits your neck and the hanger is screwed into a stud or properly anchored. If your guitar has a nitrocellulose finish, check the stand or hanger maker's note on finish compatibility for its padding. Keep stands out of walkways. Two catalog options that fit this job - an auto-locking floor stand and a padded wall hanger - and more in stands & hangers.

Long-term storage: step by step
- Clean it first - wipe the strings and body; skin oils left on for months corrode strings and dull finish (see clean a fretboard).
- String tension - never zero: makers differ on the details. Taylor advises leaving its guitars at pitch, because slackening without also loosening the truss rod can let the neck develop a back bow. Fender's storage tips suggest loosening one or two half steps but keeping tension on the neck. Both agree: do not take the strings off for storage. Some techs detune further and set the truss rod neutral for storage of a year or more - that is a truss-rod job, so leave it to a tech if you are not comfortable. Follow your own maker's manual.
- Tremolo arm: Fender suggests detaching it for storage.
- Case it with humidity control if the air is dry, in a closet near the middle of the building rather than against an outside wall. Fender's tip: stand cases upright like suits on a rack, or on their side with the top facing up - never stacked like a deck of cards.
- Check every few weeks: refresh the humidifier, look for changes, tune up. When you take it back out after cold storage or transport, let it warm up in its closed case before opening it, then check tuning and action before assuming something is wrong.
Soft case vs hard case for storage
A padded gig bag protects from dust and light bumps but not crushing, and it does little to hold humidity steady. A hard case seals better and keeps a humidifier's environment more stable - the stronger choice for long-term storage. Measure your guitar before buying; our cases guide shows how. Catalog picks: a padded acoustic gig bag, a molded dreadnought hard case, and MONO's heavily padded electric gig bag (MONO positions it as serious protection short of a hard case).

FAQ
What is the best way to store a guitar?
In a stable room away from heat, vents and exterior walls: on a stand or hanger for daily play, in its case with humidity control for long-term storage.
Should I loosen guitar strings for long-term storage?
Never take them off. Taylor advises leaving its guitars at pitch (slackening without a truss-rod adjustment can back-bow the neck); Fender suggests loosening one or two half steps while keeping tension on. Follow your maker's manual.
Should I store my guitar standing up or lying down?
In its case, standing upright or on its side with the top facing up, per Fender - not stacked under other cases.
Is it OK to store a guitar in a soft case?
For dust and light bumps, yes. For long-term protection and steadier humidity, a hard case is better.
Can I keep my guitar in the garage or attic?
Avoid it. Temperature and humidity swings there can damage wood, glue and finish.
Is it bad to leave a guitar on a stand?
No, if the room's humidity and temperature are stable and the stand is out of the way of foot traffic.
