Loose Tremolo Arm (Whammy Bar): Find Your Arm Type, Then Fix It

I'm Andrew. A tremolo arm that swings loosely or drops out is annoying, but it's rarely a sign of damage. The fix depends on what kind of arm you have, so start by finding out.

Quick answer

Screw-in arm: screw it fully in, and if it still drops, wrap a little plumber's PTFE tape around the threads. Pop-in arm: push it fully home, then adjust its tension screw if your bridge has one. A replacement arm must match your bridge exactly. Most loose arms are normal: many players like a little swing.

Step 1: what kind of arm do you have?

Not sure? Look up your guitar model on the maker's support site, or gently pull the arm out and look at the end.

Fix a loose screw-in arm

  1. Screw the arm in until it stops. Don't force it past that point.
  2. If it keeps swinging or unscrewing, wrap one or two turns of plumber's PTFE tape around the threads and screw it back in. Small blogs that cover this fix, such as Traveling Guitarist and Sandy Music Lab, describe the same method. It's cheap, removable, and doesn't touch the guitar.
  3. Some bridges have a small spring in the arm hole that adds friction. If yours is missing, ask the maker for the right part.

Fix a loose pop-in arm

  1. Push the arm firmly until it is fully seated.
  2. Many pop-in bridges have a small tension screw that sets how stiff the arm feels. Turn it a little at a time, using the key that fits it, and test after each turn. Don't overtighten.
  3. If the screw is under the bridge, reaching it can mean loosening the strings or removing the bridge. That changes the setup, so treat it as a tech job or a confident-DIY job.

Buying a replacement arm? It must match your bridge

Arms differ in thread size, diameter, length and shape between makers and even between models. A wrong arm can strip the threads in the bridge block. Check your guitar's model and year on the maker's site, and buy the arm the maker lists for that bridge. If in doubt, take the guitar to a shop.

When to see a tech

See a tech if the arm hole's threads look stripped, if the arm won't stay in even with tape, or if the whole bridge moves or rattles. A wobbly bridge isn't an arm problem. Tuning drift is covered in guitar won't stay in tune and Floyd Rose won't stay in tune.

FAQ

Is a whammy bar supposed to be loose?

A little swing is normal, and many players like it so the arm stays out of the way. If it drops out, unscrews by itself or flops when you don't want it to, use the fixes on this page.

How do I stop my tremolo arm from falling out?

For a screw-in arm, wrap one or two turns of plumber's PTFE tape around the threads. For a pop-in arm, push it fully home and adjust the tension screw if your bridge has one.

Will any tremolo arm fit my guitar?

No. Arms differ in thread size, diameter and length. Buy the arm the maker lists for your bridge model.

Can I tighten a pop-in tremolo arm?

Many pop-in bridges have a tension screw for that. If it's under the bridge, getting to it can affect the setup, so it may be a job for a tech.
