Neck Dive Fix for Bass and Guitar: Easiest Fixes First
Neck dive is when your guitar or bass tips headstock-down as soon as you let go of the neck. It happens when the neck end is heavier than the body end, and it is very common on long-scale basses and some SG-style guitars. You should not have to hold the neck up with your fretting hand, because that tires your wrist and slows your playing.
Quick answer
Start with a wide suede or leather strap with a grippy back. That fixes mild neck dive for little money and changes nothing on the instrument. Next, check the strap length and how the strap sits, then try lighter tuners. Moving or adding a strap button means drilling, which cannot be undone, so leave it for last and have a tech do it.
Use a grippy strap. A strap with a suede back grips your shirt and stops the headstock sliding down. Wider straps (2.5 to 3 inches) spread the weight and help more. It is cheap, fully reversible and often enough for mild dive.
Adjust strap length. Try the instrument a little higher or lower. The balance point changes with the angle at which it hangs.
Check strap locks and buttons. Loose buttons or a strap end slipping around makes dive worse. See how to install strap locks, which usually fit the existing screw holes.
Lighter tuners. On basses especially, lightweight tuners take weight off the very end of the neck. If the new tuners fit the existing holes and screw positions, nothing is drilled. If they need new screw holes, treat it like any other permanent change.
Clip-on or strap-mounted counterweight. Some players add a small weight at the tail strap button. It works, but it makes the whole instrument heavier.
Move the upper strap button (last resort). Moving the neck-end button further toward the tip of the upper horn, or onto the back of the horn, changes the balance most.
Before you drill: this can't be undone
Drilling a new strap-button hole is permanent. It leaves a hole if you change your mind, it can chip the finish, and on a vintage or collectible instrument it can lower the value. Screw into the wrong spot and you can hit wood that is too thin, or a cavity. Have a guitar tech do it, and try every reversible fix above first.
Bass vs guitar
Long-scale basses have more neck and heavier tuners, so they dive more. Many players solve it with a wide suede strap alone. On guitars, small-bodied double-cutaway shapes are the usual offenders. The fixes are the same.

FAQ
What causes neck dive?
The neck end (headstock, tuners and neck) outweighs the body end, measured from where the strap buttons sit. Long-scale basses and small-bodied guitars are the usual cases.
Does a suede strap really stop neck dive?
For mild neck dive, often yes. The suede back grips your clothes so the instrument cannot slide headstock-down. Severe dive needs a balance change as well.
Should I move my strap button to fix neck dive?
Only after trying a grippy strap, strap length and lighter tuners. Drilling a new hole can't be undone and can chip the finish, so have a tech do it.
Do lighter tuners help neck dive?
Yes, especially on bass, because they remove weight at the far end of the neck. Pick tuners that fit your existing holes to avoid drilling.
Is neck dive bad for my playing?
Holding the neck up tires your fretting hand and wrist. Fixing the balance lets your hand move freely.
