Christmas Gifts for Guitar Players: Ideas by Budget (2026)
I'm Andrew. Most guitar gifts that miss do so for one reason: they don't fit the player's guitar. This guide starts with three quick questions, then lists gifts by budget that are hard to get wrong. Jump to: three questions - under $25 - $25 to $50 - $50 to $100 - $100 and up - lessons - what to avoid - FAQ. Small gifts only? See guitar stocking stuffers.
Three questions to answer first (peek, or ask)
- Acoustic, electric or classical? Strings, capos and amps differ by type. A classical guitar has wide nylon strings, a steel-string acoustic has thinner metal strings, and an electric needs an amp to be heard properly.
- Beginner or experienced? Beginners get the most from tuners, books and lessons. Experienced players already own those, so think care, storage and practice gear.
- Where do they play? In a shared home, quiet gear (a headphone amp) or a wall hanger that keeps the guitar out and safe gets used most.
Can't find out? Stick to the fits anything gifts marked below.
Gifts under $25
- Snark ST-2 clip-on tuner: clips onto the headstock and tunes any guitar. Fits anything.
- Dunlop LT/MD pick variety pack (12): twelve picks in different thicknesses, so they can find what they like. Fits anything.
- D'Addario micro-fiber polish cloth: wipes sweat and fingerprints off strings and finish after playing. Fits anything.
- D'Addario Pro-Winder: winds pegs fast, cuts string ends, pulls acoustic bridge pins. Makes string changes much less of a chore.
- String Swing CC01 wall hanger: a wall hanger. A guitar that hangs in sight gets picked up more than one in a case. Needs a wall stud or proper anchor.
- Ernie Ball Polypro strap: a plain, comfortable strap for playing standing up. Needs strap buttons (most electrics and many acoustics have them).
- Strings: for an acoustic, D'Addario EJ16 acoustic strings (.012-.053); for an electric, D'Addario EXL110 electric strings (.010-.046). Both are common light gauges. If you can, check the old string packet first. Not for classical guitars.
- Kyser Quick-Change capo (acoustic): a one-hand trigger capo for steel-string acoustics. Not for classical guitars.
- Korg MA-2 metronome: a small digital metronome for steady timing. Our free online metronome works too.
- D'Addario Humidipak Maintain kit: two-way humidity packs for an acoustic stored in its case. Helpful in dry winter heating. Not needed for most electrics.
- Hal Leonard Guitar Method, Book 1: the classic step-by-step method book for a beginner.
- First 50 Songs You Should Play on Acoustic Guitar: fifty well-known acoustic songs in easy tab, for players who know their first chords.

What to avoid buying
- A guitar as a surprise, unless you know the size, type and feel they want. A gift card or a shop visit together works better. If you do buy one, read beginner guitars under $300 first.
- Effects pedals for someone whose taste you don't know.
- A stand or hanger for a vintage or nitro-finished guitar without checking: some older-style finishes can react with certain rubber or foam. See are wall hangers safe?
- Novelty gadgets that do something a free app or our free online tuner already does.

FAQ
What is a good Christmas gift for a guitar player?
If you don't know their gear, pick something that fits every guitar: a clip-on tuner, a pick variety pack, a polishing cloth or a wall hanger. If you know the guitar type, a fresh set of strings in the right type (acoustic or electric) is always used.
What should I not buy a guitarist without asking?
A guitar, an effects pedal, or a specific string gauge. These are personal, and a wrong guess usually ends up unused. A gift card or a gift certificate for lessons is safer.
Do capos fit every guitar?
No. Most capos are made for steel-string acoustic or electric necks. Classical (nylon-string) guitars have flatter, wider necks and need a capo made for them. Check the product page before you buy.
Is a practice amp a good gift for a beginner?
Only if they play an electric guitar. Acoustic guitars don't need an amp. For quiet practice in a shared home, a headphone amp like the Fender Mustang Micro plugs straight into the guitar.
What is a good guitar gift for someone who wants to learn?
Lessons plus a tuner. A Guitar Tricks gift certificate covers 3, 6 or 12 months with no subscription to cancel, and a clip-on tuner keeps the guitar in tune between lessons. See our gifts for beginners guide.
