How to Read Bass Tab (Step by Step)

Last checked Oct 22, 2026. Editorial guidance from standard beginner technique; any facts link to the sources below. See the sources.

Quick answer

Bass tab has four lines, one per string. The top line is the thin G string; the bottom line is the thick low E. A number is the fret to press on that string, and 0 means play it open. Read left to right. Five-string tab adds a fifth line at the bottom for low B. Tab rarely shows rhythm, so listen to the music too.

The four lines

GDAE0302020

Read it as: open E, E string 3rd fret, open A, A string 2nd fret, open D, D string 2nd fret, open G. That is a simple walk up across all four strings - a good first exercise.

Step by step

  1. Find the string. Top line G, then D, A, and E at the bottom - the same order you see looking down at the bass on your lap, flipped.
  2. Find the fret. The number is the fret. Press just behind that fret wire.
  3. Play in order, left to right. Spacing hints at timing but isn't exact.
  4. Stacked numbers mean play them together (less common on bass, but you will see them).
  5. Count with the song. Tab doesn't show note lengths, so listen or use a metronome.

Five-string tab

Five-string tab adds a fifth line at the bottom for the low B. Check how many lines there are before you start.

FAQ

Is bass tab the same as guitar tab?

The same idea, with four lines instead of six (five on a 5-string bass).

Does bass tab show rhythm?

Usually not. Some tab adds rhythm marks above the lines, but most expects you to know the song.

Should I learn to read music instead?

Tab is enough to start. Reading music helps later if you play from charts with others.
