How to Sing and Play Guitar at the Same Time

Quick answer: make one part automatic first - usually the guitar - then add the voice in stages. Pick a song you know well with two or three chords, strum once per bar while you sing, then once per beat, then the full pattern. Speak or hum the words before singing them, use a metronome, and use a capo to move the song into a key that suits your voice.

Why it feels impossible at first

Singing and strumming at once asks your brain to run two rhythms together. Andy Guitar's summary of the basic principle is the best one: one of the two things must be easy and automatic while you think about the other. For most people that means getting the guitar part to autopilot. Until then, your hands stop whenever you start to sing - which is completely normal.

The 6-step method

  1. Learn the chords and changes until you can play the whole song without looking at your hands. Our clean chord changes guide helps.
  2. Learn the words and melody separately - sing along with the recording without the guitar.
  3. One strum per bar. Strum the chord on beat 1 and let it ring while you sing the line. This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that makes everything else work.
  4. Speak the words in rhythm over steady down-strums (one per beat), then hum the melody, then sing. Guitar Tricks also suggests clapping along while you sing, and strumming muted strings to lock in the beat.
  5. Use a metronome slowly - see our free metronome. Speed up only when it feels easy.
  6. Add the full strum pattern last. If it falls apart, drop back a step for that section.

Choosing the right first song

Andy Guitar's advice: choose songs where the strumming matches the rhythm of the words, with no tricky syncopation, and keep strumming to once per chord at first. Good starting points:

Find your key with a capo

If a song feels too high or too low to sing, the key is wrong for your voice - not your voice for the song. A capo raises the key while you keep the same chord shapes.

  1. Play the song with no capo and sing the highest part (usually the chorus).
  2. Too low and mumbly? Move the capo up a fret and try again.
  3. Too high and strained? Use shapes from a lower key, or capo lower.
  4. Write down the capo fret that works for each song.

Our do you need a capo? page explains capo basics. Andy Guitar also notes that many bands tune down a half or whole step to suit the singer.

FAQ

How long does it take to sing and play at the same time?

It varies. With daily practice on one simple song, many learners can manage once-per-bar strumming within days and the full pattern within a few weeks.

Should I learn the guitar or the singing first?

Usually the guitar part first, until it's automatic. Some teachers prefer playing slowly enough to speak the lyrics in time - both work.

What if I can't sing?

Start by speaking the lyrics in rhythm. Singing is a skill too, and a capo to find your key helps a lot.
