Active Bass Making No Sound? Dead Battery Signs and Fixes

Basses with active pickups or an onboard preamp run on a battery, usually a 9V. When it gets weak, the bass sounds farty, distorted or quiet, and then it goes silent. A fresh battery fixes most of these cases in two minutes.

Quick answer

Put in a fresh battery first. Look for a battery box on the back of the body, or a battery inside the control cavity under a back plate. If the bass has an active/passive switch, flip it to passive: if sound comes back, the battery or preamp is the cause. Unplug the cable when you stop playing, because on most active basses the plugged-in cable switches the battery on.

Signs the battery is dying

Where the battery is

How to change it

  1. Unplug the cable.
  2. Open the box or plate and unclip the old battery.
  3. Fit the new one the right way round, without pulling on the wires.
  4. Close up, plug in at low volume and test.

New battery, still no sound?

  1. Try the passive switch if your bass has one.
  2. Swap the cable and plug straight into the amp. Work through no sound when plugged in.
  3. Check the battery snap. A broken wire or a bent snap stops power reaching the preamp.
  4. Still silent? Take it to a tech. Wiring and preamp faults inside the cavity are best left to one.

Make batteries last

Unplug after every session, keep a spare in your case, and replace the battery before an important gig if it is old.

FAQ

How do I know if my active bass battery is dead?

The bass sounds farty or distorted, loses output, or goes silent. If switching to passive mode brings the sound back, the battery is the first thing to replace.

Why does my active bass drain batteries?

On most active basses the plugged-in cable switches the battery on. Leaving the cable in drains it even when the amp is off.

Can an active bass work without a battery?

Only if it has a passive mode switch. Otherwise a dead battery means no sound.

How long does a 9V last in an active bass?

It varies a lot by preamp. Unplugging after each session keeps it far longer.
