Flatwound vs Roundwound vs Tapewound Bass Strings

Last checked Oct 23, 2026. By Andrew. See the sources.

Quick answer

Roundwound = bright and punchy (rock, funk, slap). Flatwound = smooth and warm, lasts years (soul, Motown, jazz). Tapewound = darkest and smoothest, close to upright (fretless). Not sure? Start with roundwounds.

Which should you buy?

Flatwounds often feel stiffer at the same gauge, and tapewounds can be thicker; both may need a small truss rod tweak after switching: see bass truss rod guide. Check the scale length (most basses are "long scale", 34").

FAQ

Are flatwound strings good for beginners?

Yes if you like a warm vintage sound; they are smooth on the fingers. Roundwounds suit more styles, though.

Can you slap with flatwounds?

You can, but it sounds much less bright. Roundwounds are the slap standard.

Do tapewound strings damage frets?

No, they cause the least fret and fingerboard wear.

Why do flatwounds last so long?

The smooth outer wrap traps far less sweat and dirt, so they lose brightness very slowly.

Do I need a setup after changing string type?

Often a small truss rod and action tweak, because tension differs between types.
