What is a power chord?

A power chord (written with a "5", like E5 or A5) uses the chord's root note and the note a fifth above, often with the root doubled an octave up. Because it has no third, it's neither major nor minor - which is why it sounds clean and punchy with distortion. It's also a moveable shape, so one fingering gives you every chord on the neck.

The two shapes you need

ShapeFingersExample
Root on the low E (6th) stringIndex on the root; ring finger two frets higher on the A string; add pinky on the D string at the same fret for the 3-note versionG5: 6th string fret 3, 5th string fret 5 (and 4th string fret 5)
Root on the A (5th) stringSame shape moved over one stringC5: 5th string fret 3, 4th string fret 5 (and 3rd string fret 5)
Open E5 and A5Open low string plus the next string at fret 2E5: open 6th string + 5th string fret 2. A5: open 5th string + 4th string fret 2

Root-note map for the low E string: open = E, 1 = F, 3 = G, 5 = A, 7 = B, 8 = C, 10 = D. For the A string: open = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, 5 = D, 7 = E, 8 = F, 10 = G. Mute the strings you aren't playing by letting your index finger touch them lightly. Need a refresher on reading fret numbers? See how to read guitar tabs.

Getting the sound

Power chords sound best with some distortion. Most modelling amps have a "crunch" setting; a distortion pedal like the Boss DS-1 does the same on a clean amp. Turn the gain down further than you think - too much gain makes chords mushy. Practising quietly? A headphone amp plugs straight into the guitar. More in our amps guide and pedals guide.

A 1-week power chord plan

  1. Days 1-2: open E5 and A5, then G5 on the 6th string. Slide G5 to A5 and back.
  2. Days 3-4: add the A-string shape (C5, D5). Move between strings.
  3. Day 5: palm-muted eighth notes on one chord at 70 BPM with the metronome.
  4. Days 6-7: pick a three-chord song from the list and play along slowly.

FAQ

Are power chords good for beginners?

Yes. One moveable two- or three-finger shape gives you every chord on the neck, and they're the basis of most rock and punk rhythm guitar.

Can you play power chords on acoustic?

Yes, but they sound thin without distortion. Open chords usually sound better on acoustic.

Why does my power chord sound messy?

Usually other strings are ringing. Let your index finger lightly touch the strings you're not playing, and use less gain.
