Christmas Gifts for Bass Players That Actually Fit a Bass
I'm Andrew. Buying for a bassist is trickier than buying for a guitarist, because a lot of guitar gear doesn't fit a bass. Bass strings are thicker and come in 4-string and 5-string sets, a bass is heavier, so a wider strap is more comfortable, and a guitar amp isn't made for low bass notes. This guide starts with the checks, then lists gifts that fit.
Quick answer
Safe picks if you can't ask: a wide strap, a string winder, or a headphone amp made for bass. Only buy strings or a gig bag once you know how many strings their bass has and whether it's a full-size (long-scale) bass. Want more ideas for guitar players? 4-string or 5-string? Count before you buy strings
Count the tuning pegs on the headstock. Four pegs means a 4-string set, five means a 5-string set. The strings below are 4-string sets for long-scale basses, which is the most common type. A short-scale bass (often sold as a smaller, lighter bass) needs short-scale strings, so check the bass model name before buying.
Electric or acoustic bass? Almost everything here is for electric bass. An acoustic bass doesn't need an amp to be heard at home.
Do they already have an amp? If yes, skip the amp and look at a headphone amp or a strap.
Beginner or experienced? Beginners get the most from lessons, a tuner and a first amp. Experienced players often like useful extras: strings, a winder, a better strap or a bag.
Guitar strings or guitar gig bags. They won't fit a bass.
Effects pedals, unless you know their taste. Pedals are personal.
A bass as a surprise, unless you know the scale length, number of strings and feel they want.
A gig bag for a vintage or nitro-finished bass without checking: Fender warns that the end-pin protector in its FB620 bag can mark nitrocellulose finishes over long periods.
Gifts that fit a bass
Strings first (once you've checked 4 or 5 strings), then tools, quiet practice, a bag and amps. For comfort, a wide bass strap (about 3 inches) is a safe extra; see our straps guide. Only buy an amp if they don't already have one they like. Compare amps first in best beginner bass amps.

FAQ
What is a good Christmas gift for a bass player?
If you can't ask, a wide bass strap, a string winder or a headphone amp made for bass are safe. Strings are a great gift once you know whether their bass has 4 or 5 strings.
Can I give a bass player guitar strings?
No. Bass strings are much thicker and longer, and come in 4-string and 5-string sets. Check the number of tuning pegs and the scale length before you buy.
Do bass players need a special amp?
Yes. A bass amp is built for low notes. A small guitar amp isn't designed for low bass notes, so it tends to sound thin or distort. A headphone amp made for bass, like the Vox amPlug 3 Bass, is a quiet alternative.
What is a good gift for a beginner bass player?
Lessons and a first amp help most. See our online bass lessons comparison and best beginner bass amps, and add a clip-on tuner or point them to our free online tuner.
Is a wide strap better for bass?
Many players find a wider strap more comfortable with a heavy bass, because it spreads the weight across the shoulder. Check that the strap is long enough for how low they wear the bass.
