Do You Need a String Winder? The Honest Answer (and the One to Get)
No - every guitar can be restrung by turning the tuners by hand. But a winder is one of the cheapest tools in guitar care, and the 3-in-1 kind also cuts strings and pulls acoustic bridge pins, which covers two other jobs.

Quick answer
You do not need one. You will want one if you restring often, own several guitars, play nylon strings (which stretch a lot and need many turns) or play acoustic (where the built-in pin puller lifts bridge pins safely). Best value for most people: a 3-in-1 winder with cutter and pin puller, like D'Addario's Pro-Winder ($12.99 list from D'Addario). Motorised winders save more time but cost more.

When a winder genuinely helps
- Acoustic guitars: the pin-puller notch lifts bridge pins straight up - Sweetwater names the Pro-Winder's puller as a safe first tool for stuck bridge pins.
- Classical guitars: nylon needs many turns to come up to pitch - see restring a classical.
- Several guitars or frequent string changes: the time adds up.
- Tired hands: a winder turns lots of small twists into a few cranks.
When you can skip it: one electric guitar restrung a few times a year. Hand-winding is fine.
Which kind: manual 3-in-1 or motorised
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|
| Manual 3-in-1 (winder + cutter + pin puller) | Most players; acoustic owners | Keep it square on the tuner button so it does not scratch the headstock |
| Motorised (battery) | Many guitars, frequent changes | Costs more; stop short of pitch and finish by hand |
| Drill-bit attachments | Some techs use them | A drill is easy to over-spin; a string can snap or a tuner can be stressed - not recommended for beginners |

How to use a string winder
- Fit the winder fully over the tuner button, square to it.
- Keep light tension on the string with your other hand so the wraps go on neatly and downward on the post.
- Wind in the tightening direction - on most guitars the string should leave the post on the inside, toward the centre of the headstock (see the acoustic and electric guides).
- Stop short of pitch and finish by hand while watching a tuner - it is easy to overshoot and snap a plain string with a winder.
- Trim the ends after the string is stretched and tuned, pointing the cut end away from your face.
What else is worth having for string changes
A tuner (clip-on or our free browser tuner), a cloth, and for acoustics a spare bridge pin. The rest of a starter toolkit is on our tools page.
FAQ
Do I need a string winder to change guitar strings?
No. You can turn the tuners by hand. A winder just makes it faster, and the 3-in-1 type adds a cutter and an acoustic bridge-pin puller.
What is the best guitar string winder and cutter?
For most players, a 3-in-1 manual winder with a cutter and pin puller, such as D'Addario's Pro-Winder. Motorised winders suit people who restring many guitars.
Can I use a drill as a string winder?
Some techs do, but drills spin fast and it is easy to overshoot, snap strings or stress tuners. Beginners are better off with a manual or purpose-made motorised winder.
Does a winder damage tuners?
Not when it fits squarely over the button and you finish tuning by hand. A loose, tilted fit can scratch the headstock.
